Stocks opened flat to mixed on Wall Street Thursday as investors struggled for direction amid a slew of opposing influences.
Jobless claims rose, but less than expected. Europe?appeared to be taking steps to address its financial crisis with coordinated action to recapitalize its struggling banks. But investors were disappointed that the European Central Bank did not lower interest rates further.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 5 points shortly after the opening bell. The S&P 500 was flat and the Nasdaq was up slightly. Stocks have closed higher for the prior two sessions, but it was unclear whether that momentum would continue.
Shares of Apple opened slightly lower after the news late Wednesday that the tech company's visionary founder Steve Jobs has died.
