Canonical's AWSOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both

Canonical's AWESOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both
New features and services that improve Canonical's latest version of Ubuntu seem to keep rolling in. The latest addition being the announcement of its AWSOME proxy service. No, that's not us getting over excited about it, that stands for Any Web Service Over Me, and it includes APIs that smooth the transition to OpenStack for those currently using Amazon's cloud services. Although not open source, Amazon's Web Service has such a large market share, that Canonical clearly wants to make integrating with it as smooth as possible. The AWSOME proxy will only provide basic functionality for the AWS side of things, with users still encouraged to adopt the OpenStack infrastructure for deeper capabilities. Still, if you're currently working with Bezos' platform, and this was the last barrier to hopping aboard the Precise Pangolin ship, you're in luck.

Researchers say crab-based computing possible, lobsters throw up claws in disbelief

Japanese researchers say crab-based computing possible, lobsters throw up claws in disbelief
IBM's Holey Optochip? Yawn. Fujitsu's K supercomputer? Yesterday's news. Forget about boring old conventional computing stuff, the future of computer technology lies in crabs -- lots and lots of crabs. Researchers at Kobe University and the University of the West of England's Unconventional Computing Centre have discovered that properly herded crabs can signal the AND, OR and NOT arguments essential to computers, not to mention those crucial 1s and 0s. Forcing two swarms of crabs into one, for instance, represents the OR gate -- a trick the computational crustaceans pulled off fairly reliably. Not every operation was pincer perfect, however, as the crabs tended to stumble a bit through attempts at signaling the AND function. At least guiding a group of crabs isn't as tough as herding cats -- researchers used a shadow to imitate a predatory bird and direct the hapless creatures accordingly. Sure, it may not be the first biological computer, but it just might be the first fear-based computer.

Carly Rae Jepsen Finds Concept Of Giving Guys Her Number 'Terrifying'

'I'm going to be honest, I've never actually given a guy my number,' 'Call Me Maybe' singer tells MTV News.

Judging from the lyrics of Carly Rae Jepsen's hit single "Call Me Maybe," one would think that this former "Canadian Idol" contestant has all the confidence in the world when it comes to approaching guys.

"Hey, I just met you/ And this is crazy/ But here's my number/ So call me maybe," the Justin Bieber protégé sings on the track, which just hit number one in the U.K. So has Jepsen ever been brazen enough to give a guy her number?

"I'm going to be honest, I've never actually given a guy my number before 'cause I find the concept terrifying," Jepsen revealed to MTV News. "Which is kind of where the song sparked from, the idea of why this is so scary. It should be O.K."

Well, she may not be ready to give a guy her number, but that didn't stop her from walking up to a potential love interest and giving him a big kiss ... and then running away.

"I once did a kiss-and-run. I don't know what came over me — sometimes I just do things to scare myself," Jepsen said. "But there was a guy and I just went up to him and said hello, and he said hello and I'm like, 'Alright, well, I'm leaving now and it was really nice to meet you,' and I kissed him and then I left."

That wasn't the most surprising part of the encounter. Turns out, he was just as interested in Jepsen.

"Actually, it was a little bit of a romantic story," Jepsen said. "I was playing at the bar down the street and I put posters up in my neighborhood and he saw and he came to the bar and we ended up dating for month."

Sounds like something written for a movie, but Jepsen warns that you have to be prepared in case it doesn't all work out in the end. She divulged some key advice on what not to do when trying to pick up a guy.

"When picking up a guy, don't come on too strong if you don't feel like there's any signs that he's kind of into it. Probably not a good idea to approach it," Jepsen said. "Usually you can tell. They will play eyes at you, you'll play eyes at them and there will be that shy little smile. Then go for it."

Do you agree with Carly's dating advice? Let us know in the comments.

Building Safe Work Method Statements

Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) (also known as safety procedures or safe systems of work) are the developing and construction industry standard for handling the risks associated having a certain construction activity.

SWMS provide the basis for activity induction training: before a crew engages inside a critical activity, they take part within a toolbox meeting based on the SWMS for the activity. In this process the crew is informed about hazards and risks that my affect them; are consulted on these hazards and controls and are able to recommend ways of controlling and determining new hazards. Any sort of hazard peculiar for the site of the activity are identified in this method.

SWMS are probably the most essential element of any OHS Management System manual and the most significant document on the field to manipulate activity hazards and work safely.

The actual objective of a safe work method statement is:

? To define a safe work method of work to get a certain job? To supply an induction document that workers need to read and realize just before beginning a job? To meet legal specifications, that is hazard identification and control? To system work, materials, time, staff, and to anticipate potential difficulties

Your Safe Work Method Statements need to:

? be on your organisation?s letterhead and show the name and registered office address from the organisation? be signed and dated by a senior management representative of one?s organisation, and? prepared for all work activities assessed as possessing high health and safety risks.

Your Safe Work Method Statements need to at least consist of the following:

? a description from the work to become done? the particular actual step-by-step sequence of activities/tasks involved in performing the work? the prospective hazards and risks related with each and every step from the work? the actual safety controls that will be put in spot to minimise the risks? all precautions to be taken to safeguard health and safety of personnel? all health and safety instructions to be given to persons involved with the work? identification of the components of Health and Safety, workplace injury management and workers compensation legislation, regulations, codes, standards and procedures applicable for the work, and where these documents are kept? the names and qualifications of those that will supervise the work, inspect and approve work location situations, work methods, protective measures, plant, gear and energy tools for use? a explanation of what coaching is given to individuals involved using the work? the names of those that will likely be, or have been, trained for the work activities described in the Statements, as well as the names and qualifications of the individuals accountable for coaching them? identification in the plant and gear which is most likely to be utilized on the work site, such as ladders, scaffolds, grinders, electrical leads, welding machines, fire extinguisher, tools and components? details of any Health & Safety permits and licenses necessary to carry out the work and where they are kept? details from the inspection and maintenance checks that will be, or have been, carried out on plant and equipment listed for use

Utilizing the template on the next page, fill details on the 1st page and pursue the steps below to produce the 2nd page:

1. List all the steps required to carry out the activity inside a sequential order2. Consider each and every step in the activity and identify prospective hazards (including any already identified during the Risk assessment method)3. Check the risk of harm arising from the identified hazards using the risk reckoner inside the last page of the template; determine the primary threat rating. Hazards assessed as 1, 2 or 3 are labeled as high risk, 4, 5 or 6 are low risk.4. List the methods needed to eliminate or control the potential risks. The risk of exposure to hazards should be eliminated. If it is not reasonably practicable to eliminate the risk then the exposure to the risk should be reduced so far as it is reasonably practicable by Substitution, Isolation or Engineering controls. Low level controls such as Administrative controls and using PPE should only be utilized in conjunction with one or more in the higher level controls.5. Assess the residual risk ranking following the same process as step c).6. Assign responsibility for applying each control.
