Business Article Marketing: How It Works?

Recently I told you of my journey into the world of article marketing and how I started in a place that you are probably sitting now?a business owner in need of a way to market my business online.

I did a ton of research of various methods of online marketing, and I came to the conclusion that article submissions are a crucial key to successfully marketing a website (business, product or service) on the internet.

Now, article submissions are not the only marketing tool I use, but article marketing is definitely the centerpiece of my online marketing, and it?s an ideal place for any business website owner to start.?In fact, if you?re completely new to marketing on the internet, I highly recommend that the first marketing technique you set in place is article marketing.

Last time, I gave you a really basic overview of how business article marketing works, and I really want to go a little more in depth, so that you will begin to see the need that article marketers are satisfying as well as the benefits that they receive.

Publishers need content?

The first thing you should know is that there are tons of online publishers who are looking for content to publish on their websites. You see, having quality content on a website increases the value of a website. If a website has a lot of helpful information on it, then people are likely to spend more time looking around.

Also, publishers will oftentimes have ezines that they need content for. The more helpful an ezine is, the more people will be drawn to subscribe.

The value of a website (or an ezine) is determined by its usefulness to human readers, and a website?s value to its readers is largely determined by its content.

(Why did I say ?human? readers, you may be wondering? After all, what other type of readers are there? Well, a non-human ?reader? would be Google or another search engine. Search engines use all sorts of algorithms to detect how useful a website is to a human reader. You?ll learn more about this as you become more familiar with online marketing?)

Why don?t these publishers write their own content?

A variety of reasons?they might not have the time, or they might not have the inclination or the skill. They also might have English as a second language and find it hard to write articles in English. Perhaps they don?t have the knowledge to be able to write content on the topic of their website.

Whatever the reason, they would rather that someone else write their content for them. That?s where you come in?

People doing business article marketing provide that content?

When you?re doing article marketing, you will write educational articles on the general niche of your website. You write articles teaching people about your topic and instructing them how to do things associated with your topic.

When you are writing free reprint articles, your role is that of?a teacher.

You are also an author. When an author writes a book or an article, he gets credit for it. On book jackets you?ll see an ?Author Bio? that is just that?a little biography about the author. The free reprint articles you?ll create have a similar attribution called a ?Resource box?.

The Resource Box

The?Resource Box contains biographical information, information about your business (or product or service), an incentive to visit your website, and a link to your website.

By clicking that link in the resource box, the reader is instantly taken to your website. The links in your resource boxes are also helpful in getting a higher ranking in Google. In fact, getting a higher search engine for your website in Google is the main reason why people do article marketing.

How many articles?

If you?re using an automatic?article submitter like SubmitYourArticle.com, I recommend submitting 8 articles per month for each website that you?re marketing. So, if you just have one website, you just need to submit 8 articles.

If you?re still in the phase of submitting manually, unfortunately your article quota is much higher?think dozens of articles a month. Really, if you?re serious about doing business article marketing, the sooner you start using an automatic article submitter the better. Remember, I speak from experience here?

Any questions?

Okay, we?ve gone a little deeper today on what article marketing is about and why people do it. It?s completely ethical?publishers have a need for content and you?re satisfying that need with your articles. Both the publisher and the person writing articles benefit.

We?ve still only skimmed the surface though, and it?s likely you still have some questions swimming around in your head. Please, don?t hesitate to ask me! Just leave your question as a comment, and I?m happy to try to help?

Homes For Sale Jeffersonville IN News You Can Use! | Kentuckiana ...

Homes For Sale Jeffersonville IN As the weather gets warmer, fans anxiously wait for their favorite sport to take center stage.

College basketball fans fill out their brackets, golfers dust off their clubs and dream about green jackets, baseball diamonds are prepped for opening day and the professional basketball playoff run starts heating up.

The athletes involved have been training for months for these moments, but what about the fans watching at home? Your friends want to watch the games at your place, but the house is a mess, the drinks aren?t cold and your television is a relic from the days of fat tube TVs. Let?s just say there is a preseason for a reason, even for fans.

Before the must-see sporting events of 2012 arrive, make sure you have all your bases covered at home. Here are a few tips to make sure you?re ready.

Make sure you have a TV that guests actually want to watch

Sports networks are now showing content in 3-D, making sports fan feel as if they are at the game, even when they are sitting on their couches. But many people hesitate to buy a 3-D TV because there?s still not a lot of programming available. The recent LG Sports Viewing Habits survey found 42 percent of men would prefer to have a big screen HDTV that can convert the games from 2-D to 3-D when entertaining.

Fortunately TV manufacturers have solved that problem. The new Cinema 3-D models from LG Electronics have an advanced 2-D to 3-D conversion, which allow consumers to view any sports program in 3-D. The affordable FPR 3-D technology makes it easy for a group of fans to watch the game in 3-D together. These 3-D glasses are movie-theater-style ?passive? glasses that come with a smaller price tag than the more expensive, battery-powered kind.

You also want to make sure that your new TV fits well into a viewing setup. Make sure there are enough seats for your guests to comfortably watch the game. End tables for drinks should be close by and the food buffet should have a sightline to the screen so your guests never have to miss a moment of action.

Plan your menu and overestimate on food and drink

It doesn?t matter if your guests are diehard fans or casual observers, the food and drink options are crucial. Appetizers and finger foods make perfect munchies, but consider some lighter fare for guests who prefer other options. Guacamole and chips is a can?t-miss snack that?s delicious and healthy. And always make sure napkins are in abundance if you are serving messier foods like wings or pizza.

Of course, you?ll need the space to store all of the food and drink before the big game. The LG super-capacity French-door refrigerator offers 31 cubic feet of storage space ? the largest capacity in its class (largest capacity standard-width French Door refrigerator; excludes other LG manufactured products). And LG?s unique Blast Chiller feature can chill a 12-ounce can from room temperature to ice cold in around five minutes, which is pretty important given that more than 60 percent of fans expect cold drinks when watching a game, according to the Sports Viewing Habits survey.

Make high-resolution memories without a bulky camera

You nailed the entertainment, the food and the drinks and your team came out victorious. But how will you capture the special moment? Digital cameras come in every shape, color and size, but they aren?t very convenient and seem to never be charged when you need them. Luckily, cellphone technology is so advanced that the cameras on phones are starting to rival and even beat point-and-shoots.

The LG Nitro has nearly as many features as an expensive camera with options to control image size settings, white balance, color effects and ISO settings. This slate-style smartphone fits perfectly into any pocket, ready to capture your favorite sports memory, which it can instant upload to you favorite social media websites.

Remember, the preseason isn?t just for athletes anymore. Get yourself ready for all the major sporting events this year.

Concrete Driveways Versus Asphalt ? Mitigating Tree Root Damage ...

Most of us have walked down a sidewalk and noted that the concrete was uneven because a tree had grown very large, and its roots had pushed up the concrete. Often rather than taking out the tree root, someone comes along and puts a little asphalt to level off the unevenness so no one trips and falls. This is a nice thing to do for skateboarders, and elderly people walking their dog obviously. However, would it make more sense to merely build the sidewalk out of asphalt to begin with? Then the sidewalk wouldn?t be so rigid, and therefore, it wouldn?t be pushed up between sections making it protrude at weird angles. Okay so let?s talk about this for a moment and discuss the driveway at your home.

If this is happening to your driveway, and you want to fix it, does it really makes sense to take it out and replace it with more concrete, or does it make more sense to remove the driveway, leave the tree roots, and repave it in asphalt. The asphalt gives more, and although it might crack, especially on the seal coat, it won?t look as bad as a rigid piece of concrete. Further, if you wish to repair a driveway which is already cracked and broken because it is made at of concrete, replacing it with asphalt makes sense, and although you may not like the look as much, you can lay the asphalt over the root system allowing it space it needs, and give yourself and the tree root a little flexibility.

If you?re going to sell your home, some realtors advise against this, but I can?t believe that a cracked concrete driveway is better than a newly done asphalt one. Additionally, if you add some trim and edges, you can get it looking pretty spiffy, and still maintain the curb appeal which helps your home sell, while commanding a higher price. Asphalt is also nice because it hides some of the grease stains or oil stains in case you have a car that leaks oil or if friends come to visit and park in your driveway and their cars leak for some reason.

Lastly, there is a big cost differential between an asphalt driveway and a concrete driveway, and we are talking not just in the hundreds of dollars, but in the thousands of dollars. If you do it yourself, you can substantially reduce the cost for putting in either concrete or asphalt, but if you repave your driveway and have someone else do it putting the concrete, that can run you a bundle. Indeed, these are just some of the major considerations if you have a damaged driveway from a large tree?s root system. Please consider all this and think on it.

Every buyer and every insurance company is different, but here are a few general ideas that can apply to almost every health insurance situation:One easy way for households with more than one income to save on health insurance is to consolidate their plans. Find out which company offers the best plan for the money, then add everyone to that plan and close other plans. You are sure to notice a significant difference in your paychecks once the insurance is only being drawn from one account.Increase your deductible for lower premiums, but prepare to pay more out-of-pocket expenses. D.C. Man Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison for Wire Fraud, ID Theft ...

A Washington man convicted of using more than $225,000 in counterfeit business checks to host lavish parties was sentenced Friday to 96 months in prison today by a federal district judge in Virginia.

Austin Davidson, 32, who pleaded guilty in December to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, was also ordered to pay $227,281 in restitution to victims of a scheme that prosecuting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Neil MacBride likened to that of Frank Abagnale Jr., whose 1960s check forgeries became the focus of Hollywood movie Catch Me If You Can.

?Austin Davidson wanted to live the high life ? but he didn?t want to pay for it,? MacBride wrote in a statement. ?But each scam required that he get away in the nick of time, and the Secret Service ultimately caught up with him."

With the help of a computer and printer, Davidson would produce checks bearing the names of well-known financial companies like JP Morgan Chase and The Carlyle Group. Then, assuming the identity of a company employee, he would use these checks to rent upscale homes, purchasing catered food and limousine service for parties he hosted.

While living in the rented homes, Davidson also occasionally stole property of the owners, including personal checks that were then used to buy, among other things, a Mercedes Benz.

According to a Justice Department press release, at the time he was caught, Davidson had a party planned for the night following his arrest in conjunction with a championship boxing match in D.C.

At his sentencing, United States District Judge Liam O?Grady also considered Davidson's history of check fraud and identity theft, crimes he was first convicted of when he was 17 years old.

1. According to FASB a lease is classified as a capital or an operating lease. To be classified as a capital lease, it has to meet at least one of the criteria established by FASB. The criteria includes transferring of ownership, containing a bargain purchase option, the lease term is equal to 75 percent or more of the estimated economic life, and the present value of the minimum lease payments equals or exceeds 90 percent of the excess of the fair value of the leased property. If a lease does not meet any of the criteria, it is classified as an operating lease (FASB ASC 840-10-25-1). Capital leases will be depreciated over the term of the lease. If there is a transfer of ownership or bargain purchase option, the asset will be depreciated over the economic life (FASB ASC 840-30-35-1). To record interest expense for a capital lease, the effective interest method is used (FASB ASC 840-30-35-6).

The ISAB classifies a lease as either a financing lease or an operating lease (IAS 17.4). ? To

determine what kind of lease, it depends on the substance of the transaction rather than the form (IAS 17.10). The criteria to satisfy being a finance lease are the same as FASB?s criteria. Like FASB, IFRS depreciated in the same manner; over the shorter of the lease term or the life of the asset (IAS 17.27).
The exposure draft for leases that was established, proposes that all leases would be treated as an asset being the ?right to use? and the liability being the loan value to finance that asset. We agree with the proposal that a lessee should recognize a right-of-use asset and a liability to make lease payments because regardless if the risk of owning an asset is transferred the lessee is still responsible to making payments. Thus, the lessee should record a liability. We also agree that a lessee should recognize amortization of the right-of-use asset and interest on the liability to make lease payments because it will bring the sum of the total asset and liability to zero at?

Seashore Apes Or Brine Shrimp? What you may Give them a call ...

Come about associated with Producing 3 Content Nowadays:

I did so most of my own writing, now, for the end of the week therefore modern day writing goal can be a miniscule 4 posts. I?ll have that finished away in no time.cages for sale My spouse and i start the following with this particular first post, in addition to being My spouse and i variety these kinds of terms, My spouse and i, nonetheless, haven?t chosen the niche or the subject matter. Prior to My spouse and i end inputting this kind of phrase, however, I?ll hold the answer to the particular question, Exactly what should My spouse and i reveal?

Brine Shrimp, Minor Components of Life inside Brine:

My spouse and i arrive the following, nowadays, to Newsletter to create about the all-interesting subject matter associated with brine shrimp. Plus some person may be on it stating who cares can be brine shrimp, simply how much are you able to reveal might of the items significance would it be to me-when I am not enthusiastic about pets? And also to which question I?ve a lot of solutions, perhaps a remedy this sort of as-when My spouse and i reveal brine shrimp, there?s that I can reveal that may curiosity everyone-EVEN those people who are certainly not enthusiastic about pets, fish or even pets. Knowning that the main subject matter arrive at the conclusion of this informative article.

Initial, how does My spouse and i become knowledgeable regarding brine shrimp? Long ago, although checking out the particular pets during my dads store, I ran across this kind of refrigerator-bin container that?s filled with water along with within the container had been a great aerator conduit. This conduit had been consistently working fresh air bubbles in the water to circulate the water and also to add air to the water. In the container were thousands, or even millions of tiny, brine shrimp pets. My dad used these kinds of pets to give many of the bass. The actual air kept the particular brine shrimp water thoroughly clean, circulating, productive along with fascinating of those sea critters.

If you have bass, you might want to boost brine shrimp to give all of them. And then you need not come to an end to buy your are living foodstuff, however, you have it handily accessible all the time.

Financial, Credit Departments along with Brine Shrimp:

Right now, how does brine shrimp curiosity you-who aren?t enthusiastic about mother nature, pets or even sea existence? I will tell a person of your experience which i got although operating on the Run after Manhattan Financial institution, In.A., many years ago. I had been employed in the financing section along with had been opening up the particular mail for that morning while i realized that countless correspondence were about the same subject matter. One of our customers were a company which promised to deliver particular magical little sea monkeys to the customers. The actual adverts were lovable and very enticing. I am sure which perhaps people certainly not enthusiastic about mother nature would be enthusiastic about discovering these kinds of little odd sea monkeys. However back then, we received countless correspondence concerning this business, folks inquiring when the business had been legit since they were ready for his or her sea-monkeys. Throughout reality- people sea monkeys were only brine shrimp.

'Brain fog' of menopause confirmed

ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) ? The difficulties that many women describe as memory problems when menopause approaches are real, according to a study published recently? in the journal Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society.

The findings won't come as a surprise to the millions of women who have had bouts of forgetfulness or who describe struggles with "brain fog" in their late 40s and 50s. But the results of the study, by scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago who gave women a rigorous battery of cognitive tests, validate their experiences and provide some clues to what is happening in the brain as women hit menopause.

"The most important thing to realize is that there really are some cognitive changes that occur during this phase in a woman's life," said Miriam Weber, Ph.D., the neuropsychologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center who led the study. "If a woman approaching menopause feels she is having memory problems, no one should brush it off or attribute it to a jam-packed schedule. She can find comfort in knowing that there are new research findings that support her experience. She can view her experience as normal."

The study is one of only a handful to analyze in detail a woman's brain function during menopause and to compare those findings to the woman's own reports of memory or cognitive difficulties.

The study included 75 women, from age 40 to 60, who were approaching or beginning menopause. The women underwent a battery of cognitive tests that looked at several skills, including their abilities to learn and retain new information, to mentally manipulate new information, and to sustain their attention over time. They were asked about menopause symptoms related to depression, anxiety, hot flashes, and sleep difficulties, and their blood levels of the hormones estradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone were measured.

Weber's team found that the women's complaints were linked to some types of memory deficits, but not others.

Women who had memory complaints were much more likely to do poorly in tests designed to measure what is called "working memory" -- the ability to take in new information and manipulate it in their heads. Such tasks in real life might include calculating the amount of a tip after a restaurant meal, adding up a series of numbers in one's head, or adjusting one's itinerary on the fly after an unexpected flight change.

Scientists also found that the women's reports of memory difficulties were associated with a lessened ability to keep and focus attention on a challenging task. That might include doing the taxes, maintaining sharp attention on the road during a long drive, completing a difficult report at work despite boredom, or getting through a particularly challenging book.

Weber notes that such cognitive processes aren't what typically come to mind when people think of "memory." Oftentimes, people consider memory to be the ability to tuck away a piece of information, such as a grocery item you need to remember to buy, and to retrieve it later. The team found little evidence that women have problems with this ability. Weber notes, though, that the 75 women in the study were more highly educated and on average of higher intelligence than the general population, and a decline might have been difficult to detect.

Women who reported memory difficulties were also more likely to report symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep difficulties. The team did not find any link between memory problems and hormone levels.

Generally anywhere from one-third to two-thirds of women during this stage of life report forgetfulness and other difficulties that they view as related to poor memory.

"If you speak with middle-aged women, many will say, yes, we've known this. We've experienced this," said Weber, assistant professor of Neurology. "But it hasn't been investigated thoroughly in the scientific literature.

"Science is finally catching up to the reality that women don't suddenly go from their reproductive prime to becoming infertile. There is this whole transition period that lasts years. It's more complicated than people have realized."

"People are surprised to learn that typically, for example in elderly adults, there really isn't a lot of evidence that memory complaints are tied to real memory deficits. Menopausal women are different. They are good at rating their memory skills," added co-author Pauline Maki, Ph.D., director of Women's Mental Health Research in UIC's Department of Psychiatry.

"We don't know why but perhaps it's because their memory changes are more sudden and they are aware of other changes that accompany the menopause, like hot flashes. This might help them to better assess their mental abilities," Maki added.

The latest findings are in line with results from a previous study that Weber did with Mark Mapstone, Ph.D., associate professor of Neurology, as well as results from a study which involved hundreds of women but used less sensitive measures to look at cognitive performance.

"There really is something going on in the brain of a woman at this stage in her life," Mapstone said. "There is substance to their complaints that their memory is a bit fuzzy."

For women who feel they are having memory problems, Weber has some advice.

"When someone gives you a new piece of information, it might be helpful to repeat it out loud, or for you to say it back to the person to confirm it -- it will help you hold onto that information longer," Weber said. "Make sure you have established that memory solidly in the brain.

"You need to do a little more work to make sure the information gets into your brain permanently. It may help to realize that you shouldn't expect to be able to remember everything after hearing it just once."

Health project coordinator Jennifer Staskiewicz, now of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, also contributed to the study, which was funded by the National Institute on Aging.

Study shows rats match humans in decision-making that involves combining different sensory cues

Study shows rats match humans in decision-making that involves combining different sensory cues

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

The next time you set a trap for that rat running around in your basement, here's something to consider: you are going up against an opponent whose ability to assess the situation and make decisions is statistically just as good as yours.

A Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) study that compared the ability of humans and rodents to make perceptual decisions based on combining different modes of sensory stimuli?visual and auditory cues, for instance?has found that just like humans, rodents also combine multisensory information and exploit it in a "statistically optimal" way -- or the most efficient and unbiased way possible.

"Statistically optimal combination of multiple sensory stimuli has been well documented in humans, but many have been skeptical about this behavior occurring in other species," explains Assistant Professor Anne Churchland, Ph.D., a neuroscientist who led the new study. "Our work is the first demonstration of its occurrence in rodents." The study appears in the March 14 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

This discovery is exciting, according to Churchland, because it suggests that the same evolutionarily conserved neural circuits underlie this behavior in both humans and rodents. "By observing this behavior in rodents, we have a chance to explore its neural basis ? something that is not feasible to do in people," Churchland says.

Such investigations, she hopes, will explain why patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) integrate sensory information in an atypical and less-than-optimal way, relative to healthy people. "We can use our rat model to 'look under the hood' to understand how the brain is combining multisensory information and be in a better position to develop treatments for these disorders in people."

Churchland and her team tested multisensory integration in humans and rats by designing a task that gauged how the subjects made decisions when presented with visual and auditory stimuli -- separately and in tandem. "We threw in a couple of additional features that made the task challenging enough to simulate a real-life situation," Churchland adds.

Her team also designed the task keeping in mind the caveat that our brains process visual information much slower than auditory information. "Our task included stimuli that were much more dynamic and temporal (time-varying) compared to other studies that have tested multisensory integration, which we regard an important advance in the field," explains Churchland.

Her team now reports that both humans and rats made more accurate decisions when presented with combined multisensory information and that this decision-making was close to being statistically optimal ? a mathematical prediction of how well each subject could possibly perform in the task.

The researchers have also found evidence that offers fresh insight into how the brain deals with the challenge of having a visual processing system that's slower that the auditory processing system. "Even though visual and auditory stimuli don't come in exactly at the same time, we think that the brain keeps events in sequence by processing each sensory cue in parallel, fusing the two signals at a later stage and then making a judgment about the fused signal," elaborates Churchland.

Her team next plans to investigate how the two streams of information are being combined and how the brain combines sensory experience with memory. "Now that we have a good animal model in which to investigate these questions, the world?or the brain?is our oyster," she says.

The Lifesaving Road Trip Screening Tour Raises Awareness About ...

Follow Me on Pinterest Massive Sales Results @ 1/2 the investment

The statistics are staggering-and growing. More than 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. There are more new cases of skin cancer in the U.S. than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. The key to keeping skin healthy? Detect and treat skin cancer as early as possible. Caught in the early stages, skin cancer is treatable.

?Many people are at risk, but skin cancer is also one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer,? says Dr. Mark Lebwohl, Professor and Chairman, Department of Dermatology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York.

To raise awareness of skin cancer and early detection and treatment, The Skin Cancer Foundation and Doak Dermatologics, a division of Bradley Pharmaceuticals, Inc., have joined forces on an innovative public service campaign. Throughout 2006, The Skin Cancer Screening Tour is heading to major cities across the U.S. to perform this important service.

Doak Dermatologics has built a custom-designed Mobile Diagnosis Vehicle (MDv) that will be staffed by local, board-certified dermatologists in each city, ready to offer free skin cancer screenings. The physicians will be looking for four primary forms of skin cancer or precancerous skin conditions:

1. Actinic Keratosis (AK), which affects 1.3 million people annually. AK is the most common type of precancerous skin lesion. If left untreated, AK can lead to squamous cell carcinoma.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is a form of skin cancer that affects 200,000 Americans each year. SCC can metastasize (spread) quickly. SCCs that metastasize most often arise on mucous membranes or lips.

3. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a common form of skin cancer, affecting more than 800,000 Americans annually. Chronic exposure to sunlight is most often the cause of BCC, which occurs most frequently on exposed parts of the body.

4. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and has increased more rapidly than any other form of skin cancer during the past 10 years. By 2010, melanoma is projected to rise in one in 50 Americans. If diagnosed and removed early, melanoma is almost 100% curable.

Get Screened Today!

When The Skin Cancer Screening Tour comes to town, be sure to pay it a visit. Of course, you don?t have to wait for the MDv to get screened. Make an appointment with your local dermatologist for a screening as soon as you can.

Whether it?s on the MDv or with your dermatologist, the important thing is to get screened early and, if required, treated. It could save your life.

A cross-country tour is helping drive many people toward better health.

Correcting human mitochondrial mutations

Monday, March 12, 2012

Researchers at the UCLA stem cell center and the departments of chemistry and biochemistry and pathology and laboratory medicine have identified, for the first time, a generic way to correct mutations in human mitochondrial DNA by targeting corrective RNAs, a finding with implications for treating a host of mitochondrial diseases.

Mutations in the human mitochondrial genome are implicated in neuromuscular diseases, metabolic defects and aging. There currently are no methods to successfully repair or compensate for these mutations, said study co-senior author Dr. Michael Teitell, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and a researcher with the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA.

Between 1,000 and 4,000 children per year in the United States are born with a mitochondrial disease and up to one in 4,000 children in the U.S. will develop a mitochondrial disease by the age of 10, according to Mito Action, a nonprofit organization supporting research into mitochondrial diseases. In adults, many diseases of aging have been associated with defects of mitochondrial function, including diabetes, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and cancer.

"I think this is a finding that could change the field," Teitell said. "We've been looking to do this for a long time and we had a very reasoned approach, but some key steps were missing. Now we have developed this method and the next step is to show that what we can do in human cell lines with mutant mitochondria can translate into animal models and, ultimately, into humans."

The study appears March 12, 2012 in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The current study builds on previous work published in 2010 in the peer-reviewed journal Cell, in which Teitell, Carla Koehler, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry and a Broad Stem Cell Research Center scientist, and their team uncovered a role for an essential protein that acts to shuttle RNA into the mitochondria, the energy-producing "power plant" of a cell.

Mitochondria are described as cellular power plants because they generate most of the energy supply within a cell. In addition to supplying energy, mitochondria also are involved in a broad range of other cellular processes including signaling, differentiation, death, control of the cell cycle and growth.

The import of nucleus-encoded small RNAs into mitochondria is essential for the replication, transcription and translation of the mitochondrial genome, but the mechanisms that deliver RNA into mitochondria have remained poorly understood.

The study in Cell outlined a new role for a protein called polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPASE) in regulating the import of RNA into mitochondria. Reducing the expression of PNPASE decreased RNA import, which impaired the processing of mitochondrial genome-encoded RNAs. Reduced RNA processing inhibited the translation of proteins required to maintain the mitochondrial electron transport chain that consumes oxygen during cell respiration to produce energy. With reduced PNPASE, unprocessed mitochondrial-encoded RNAs accumulated, protein translation was inhibited and energy production was compromised, leading to stalled cell growth.

The findings from the current study provide a form of gene therapy for mitochondria by compensating for mutations that cause a wide range of diseases, said study co-senior author Koehler.

"This opens up new avenues to understand and develop therapies for mitochondrial diseases," Koehler said. "This has the potential to have a really big impact. We just have to get it to the next step."

Gene therapy is often used to express proteins that can treat the cause of a variety of diseases. In this case, post-doctoral fellow Geng Wang developed a strategy to target and import specific RNA molecules encoded in the nucleus into the mitochondria and, once there, to express proteins needed to repair mitochondrial gene mutations.

First, the research team had to figure out a way to stabilize the reparative RNA so that it was transported out of the nucleus and then localized to the mitochondrial outer membrane. This was accomplished by engineering an export sequence to direct the RNA to the mitochondrion. Once the RNA was in the vicinity of the transport machinery on the mitochondrial surface, then a second transport sequence was required to direct the RNA into the targeted organelle. With these two modifications, a broad spectrum of RNAs were targeted to and imported into the mitochondria, where they functioned to repair defects in mitochondrial respiration and energy production in two different cell line models of human mitochondrial disease.

"This study indicates that a wide range of RNAs can be targeted to mitochondria by appending a targeting sequence that interacts with PNPASE, with or without a mitochondrial localization sequence, to provide an exciting, general approach for overcoming mitochondrial genetic disorders," the study states.

Going forward, Teitell and Koehler will test their new method in small animal models to determine whether they can fix a mitochondrial defect as it occurs in a whole organism. One potential use for the new method would also be to repair mitochondrial defects in reprogrammed, embryonic or adult-type stem cells for use in regenerative medicine therapies.

Video: Film offers shocking look at bullying

>>> we're back now with a problem of grave concern to the parents of school-age kids. it is greating great new -- it is about the brutal world of bullying as camera as rolled on those caught in the act . there's a controversy not so much about the subject, but about the film's rating. we get the story tonight from nbc's michelle franzen .

>> they punch me, strangle me. take things from me.

>> reporter: it is a shocking look inside the world of bullying. and its painful effects including suicide.

>> some kids told him he's worthless, to go hang himself. i think he got to the point where enough was enough.

>> reporter: for a year, the filmmakers followed families of bullied kids around the country in including 12-year-old alex libby.

>> i feel kind offer nervous going to the schools.

>> reporter: as the camera as rolled, the taunts continued. the film shows what happened when alex's parents turned to the school for help.

>> he's not safe on that bus.

>> i have been on that bus. they are just as good as gold.

>> reporter: for the producer and director, making the film was also personal.

>> i was bullied as a kid, and i think as a filmmaker it was something that i really carried with me.

>> reporter: the film's graphic language earned it an "r" rating. children under 17 need to be accompanied by an adult. some say that will make it harder for those most affected by the problem to see the film. the filmmakers and others including ellen degeneres are lobbying hard to get it changed to pg-13 saying the film could save lives. a michigan team and anti-bully anti-bullyianti-bully anti-bullying advocate delivered a petition to the ratings board.

>> i thought it was a bad idea because the target audience for the movie is middle school and high school students.

>> reporter: a media watchdog group agree, saying kids as young as 13 should see the movie.

>> it's the kind of movie that can be a real learning experience for kids around parents alike. and in a sense can be a teachable moment even though it's a painful topic.

>> my voice is not going to fall silent.

>> reporter: a necessary discussion that filmmakers hope will lead to change. michelle franzen , nbc news, new york.

Accounting and Payroll Software ? Ten Reasons Current Software ...

As a business owner, it?s easy to make accounting and payroll software a low priority. After all, you are busy making sure sales are up, costs are down, profits are high, and everyone is staying productive. Unfortunately, it?s so easy to fall behind if you don?t stay abreast of technology, and when that happens you can quickly lose the benefits that the software was supposed to provide in the first place. Here are ten reasons why keeping your accounting and payroll software technology current is crucial to the successful operation of your business.

1. Hardware Compatibility: The old dot matrix printer still works fine, humming away in the corner, printing your invoices dot by dot. Hey, you can?t hear each other speak over the noise, but you?ve become accustomed to it. So, why move? This is an all-too-common scenario, whether it?s a printer, computer, or a long list of other hardware devices. For a business, hardware is an important component which allows you to print invoices, save valuable files, communicate with customers, and much more. The older your software system gets, the less likely you will be able to keep on performing those functions in a timely manner, and eventually you won?t be able to at all. The software you are using plays a huge role in the hardware you are able to operate. Compatibility with new hardware is why it?s important to keep your software up to date.

2. Safety and Security: The good news is that we are now able to communicate much more quickly within a business, and also with outside contacts such as vendors and customers. E-mail, instant messaging, and a host of other modern technologies make communication much faster! But the downside is that there are also many more security threats. Keeping your software technology current helps keep your data safe from hackers!

3. Time Savings: If you?ve been doing things the same way for many years, it?s easy to believe that your way is the fastest way available. After all, learning a new system does take time. But in the long run, things like running reports, processing invoices and keeping track of data are generally done more quickly with newer technology.

4. Company Image: How do your customers feel when they receive and view your invoice? Is it printed on nice paper with your logo and a custom message? Or is it printed on thin paper with tear marks on the sides, barely legible because of printing issues? Do not discount the fact that what your customers receive from you impacts their image of you. Having newer technology allows you to print documents and perform other functions that look much more professional than they did years ago.

5. Customer Satisfaction: What happens when your customer asks to view all of their sales from you for the past three years? Are you able to help them, or is your historical data limited? This is one example where your technology affects your customer satisfaction. By moving to newer technology, you can improve your customer service and meet the needs of your customer more quickly and easily.

6. The Green Factor: Older programs often require the printing of documents such as reports, financial statements, invoices, orders and other documents. Newer technology offers the ability to keep track of and send such communications electronically, saving many trees per year!

7. Crucial Updates: If the software technology you are using is extremely old, chances are your program is no longer being updated or enhanced by the company who developed it. You may think your program doesn?t require any more updates because it?s been around for so many years. The truth is that updates and enhancements help keep your software compatible with everything else on your computer. By not receiving updates, you will experience more and more problems as other technology moves forward. Moving to newer technology can assure you get the updates to keep your company safe and secure.

8. Support and Help: Many older programs are no longer supported, meaning there is no help available in case of questions or problems you may have with the software. While you may know the software well, there are always questions that arise with the advancement of other technology you are using. Maybe you installed a new printer or need help getting a time clock working with your software. Or perhaps a new employee started who is unfamiliar with the program and has questions. In cases like these, having support available is crucial to the function of your business.

9. Compliance: These days even the government is starting to require companies to have a certain level of technology. Certain government forms must now be submitted online, and no doubt that trend will continue. Older programs often cannot handle the newer tools necessary to stay compliant, and moving to new technology will be needed to meet those requirements.

10. The Band-Aid Factor: If you have ever had an extremely old car, you are all too familiar with the process of fixing one thing after another until you are worn down, and your pocketbook is empty. Trying to get anything old to keep working can become tiresome and can also become extremely expensive. Because you are keeping so busy trying to make the system work, you may not even be aware of how much time and money you are spending to hold everything together. Moving to newer software technology can seem challenging at first, but it is typically the best option for your business in the long-term.

The Numbers Don?t Lie

This line of attack is so strong and insistent that the New York Times public editor, Arthur Brisbane, felt it necessary to weigh in on whether the paper?s stories tying Citizens United to super PACs were fair. (He concluded they were, but that the truth was complicated.) The purpose of the drumbeat appears to be to insulate the Supreme Court from further criticism of the Frankenstein?s monster they?ve created.

It is true that before Citizens United people could spend unlimited sums on independent advertising directly supporting or opposing candidates.?But that money had to be spent by the individual directly.?It could not be given to a political action committee, which had an individual contribution cap of $5,000 and could not take corporate or union funding.?In many cases, wealthy individuals did not want to spend their own money on advertising, which would say ?Paid for by Sheldon Adelson? or ?Paid for by George Soros,? so fewer of these ads were made. The only way to avoid having your name plastered across every ad was to give to the 527s, which claimed they could take unlimited money from individuals (including, sometimes, corporate and labor union money) on grounds that they were not PACs under the FEC?s definition of PACs.?These organizations were somewhat successful, but a legal cloud always hung over them.?During the 2008 Democratic primary season, Bob Bauer, candidate Obama?s lawyer, barged in on a pro-Hillary Clinton conference call to say that people giving to 527s to support Clinton could face criminal liability.
